How to Shape Our Poly Shoes
With Wide and Narrow patterns, our HorseShoes are made to fit most feet. But if you have a situation that needs special consideration, such as an Extra wide foot or Christmas tree hoof pattern, you may want to shape the shoe without losing any of it to grinding or rasping.
This is where shaping comes in extremely handy. And it is easier than old methods of forging and hammering on an anvil! All you need is a convenient oven, such as a toaster oven, trigger clamps or a shoe spreader. See below for step by step instructions, tips and videos.
Step 1. Heat
Heat oven to 300-325° F, insert shoe to be shaped
and let heat for about 10 minutes.
The shoe will become malleable when it’s internal temperature reaches 260° F. Usually about 10 minutes, but will take longer for larger draft sizes.
In this example we used an 0W and narrowed it, but you can use the narrow (hind) pattern for an even more custom fit.
Step 2. Place in Clamps
Using gloves, remove the shoe from the oven
and place in clamps, adjusting size and placement. You will have a few minutes of working time. Leave in place until room temperature, it will harden back to original firmness in about 10 min.
To narrow the shoe, use the trigger clamp to squeeze from the side, you can usually narrow the shoe about 1/8”.
Step 3. Let Set Up
Remove clamps, shoe is ready to use!
In the example above you can see this 0W has been widened by about 1/8” by squeezing from top to bottom. If you require additional width, you may have to size up.
Extremely versatile for a variety of customizations and shapes.
(Notice the shoe is sole side up- this helps
keep it flat on the ground side while it sets up.)
Using a shoe spreader and carabiner to hold the shape as it cools. To get the shoe back to its original shape, you can place it back in the oven one time for the 10 min. heat period.
